Last week I had a chance to meet with leaders throughout my region and I can’t tell you enough how happy I was to hear how they are doing. These happy faces you see in these pictures is a reality. I won’t lie, it was stressful when I first started with staffing challenges and engagement issues EVERYWHERE. In fact, this was the biggest challenge of my career. The wheels on the bus were getting ready to fall off. We had available pharmacist and leadership openings everywhere and we were on that verge of losing more. Today? I have a waiting list for pharmacists that want to join us from orgazinations all around us in some of the most challenging places to staff in the country. Yes - a waiting list. How did we do it? The leaders believed in the vision and culture we were creating. I didn’t want them to just “talk” about it. I wanted them to live it with taking action. Our teams started to notice. They bought into what we hammered home…always put your health and well-being above all else. We talked about it on every visit and my leaders talked about it on every visit. They bought into the culture that it is ok to take care of yourself AND to perform at a high level. We made it a culture to openly talk about pharmacist and pharmacy team well-being and I can’t tell you enough how happy I am to see how well this team is doing. I held two leadership meetings last week and what I saw and heard made me so happy.Pharmacy practice is not easy anywhere today. Don’t let anyone fool you. There are challenges everywhere and not only in community pharmacy. Saying that, if you focus on helping your teams work in a healthy, supported and highly engaged work environment, the results will eventually come and your turnover will plummet. My teams know pharmacy practice is changing and they are ready to change with it to better care for our patients all while caring for themselves. #pharmacist #business #pharmacists ##hr #wellness #wellbeing

On Wednesday, the June Michigan Board of Pharmacy meeting took place in Michigan’s Capitol. It was a great opportunity to connect with industry leaders, including Nichole Cover the former Chair of the Michigan Board of Pharmacy, whom I have long admired.Building your network with extraordinary people is important more than ever and if you attend our meetings, you get to meet extraordinary people like her. Impressively, the meeting saw a significant turnout of technicians, nearly matching the number of attending pharmacists. Moreover, I was excited to host a group of pre-pharmacy students who left eager to pursue a career in pharmacy after learning more about the field. Ever person that attends the Board of Pharmacy meetings walks away with a new outlook and viewpoint on pharmacy compliance. It's always fulfilling to inspire the next generation of pharmacy professionals. Our next meeting is on August 14th in Lansing and you can attend via Zoom or in person. #MichiganBoardofPharmacy #PharmacyMeeting #PharmacyProfession #InspiringFuturePharmacists #business #pharmacy #hr #pharmacist #pharmacytechnician #pharmacists #pharmacytechnicians

My wife is a school teacher and she just finished the school year. She works with special needs children, many with severe autism and other challenges. It’s hard to raise kids these days. It’s even harder to raise children with special needs. These kids can do it…sometimes not as fast as other kids and need educators like Mervet Foumia that have patience and understanding. Before many people became pharmacists, doctors, lawyers, engineers, nurses etc etc teachers like Mervet impacted their lives leading them to where they are today. Many think teaching is easy, but I would watch her come home exhausted many days. The work she does is making an impact with so many children and many times with struggling parents. The other day, she reposted something that is circulating around that should resonate with all of us. This is powerful and a great reminder as you start your Monday to approach the day with gratitude. “A big shout out to all the kids who didn’t win an award, make honor roll, or barely made it through the school year. A big hug to the moms, dads, grandparents, caregivers, and foster parents who stuck by them as they maneuvered the school year the best they could. To the kids that didn’t get invited to the prom, didn’t get a scholarship to college, and/or have to go straight to work out of high school.... you still did it. You still reached your own amazing milestone even if it isn’t recognized. You are still worthy of a pat on the back and a Facebook post with people talking about how amazing you are. Some kids have to work twice as hard as other students just to get a C. Their achievements deserve recognition. Don’t forget those kids. Kindness, creativity, and generosity.... those attributes sadly don’t get the accolades they deserve. Sincerely, A mom and an educatorCredit goes to Facebook post circulating#weseeyou #youareworthy #workjustashardifnotharder #teachers #educators #specialneeds #business #humanresources #hr

Sharing some tips I spoke about last night about the importance of building your network with GOOD people that care about you, care about our profession AND are dedicated to helping others. My goal last month was to meet people from the Ohio Board of Pharmacy as I heard so many great things about their executive director. I did that! Same with Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin and so many other Boards of Pharmacy across the country. I had the honor of working with and adding so many of these great people to my network. Same with meeting people from Walgreens, CVS and so many other employers that care about the future of our profession.Building a powerful and impactful network and surrounding yourself with good people is crucial. So is getting more leaders in pharmacy practice that operate with kindness, compassion and empathy. You simply don't need to be a jerk to be successful. This is one of my favorite pictures as it symbolizes so much. Is there any greater quality right now that is needed more than kindness, compassion and the unrelenting willingness to help others, especially those that are struggling the most? There are a lot of people in our profession that need a helping hand. Here are some tips for leaders. If we all reached a little more and did a little more to help others, we would all be in a better place.1. If someone is looking for a job and you don't have any openings, still offer to talk to them to offer some advice and use your network to help them. This will also help you down the road as it will help you be an awesome recruiter. 2. I can't stress the importance of surrounding yourself with good people. Your inner circle and wider circle will define your future success. The old saying "its not what you know BUT who you know" is 100% spot on. So many are applying for jobs without call backs. You have to know how to overcome ATS (automatic tracking software) during the application process and nothing is more powerful to overcome this than your CONNECTIONS/NETWORK!3. Follow up to point 2, keep expanding your network. I never stop trying to meet new people from within my industry and outside of my industry. Nothing is more important right now. 4. We need kinder, more compassionate leaders that have a servant leadership mentality. Learn about servant leadership and become one! We have to get over this myth that servant leaders can't be successful. FALSE. I believe our most successful and impactful leaders understand this point. 5. Get more involved. Specifically, if you are a pharmacist or technician, get more involved by attending association meetings and Board of Pharmacy meetings. Our next Michigan Board of Pharmacy meeting is June 12th in Lansing. Simply google search "Michigan Board of Pharmacy Agendas" and you will find the links to the in person meeting and zoom link.#pharmacy #Pharmacist #business #humanresources #compassion #humility #pharmacists #hr #pharmacytechnicians #servantleadership #empathy

In 2022, I was very close to walking away from my career to be able to care for my elderly Mom with dementia. I wanted to share an update why my life has changed so much and her life too, for the better. I update this often on this platform as so many professionals struggle working and taking care of a loved one and balancing their own families. This is why I continue to share my story. I was on the brink of having to walk away from my career 2 years ago and I had just achieved my life dream of serving on the Board of Pharmacy. If you are struggling with this, which so many are, let me give you some tips to help you personally, to help you battle dementia and being a caregiver. Dementia is a horrible disease but I have been able to get her so healthy. All of her disease states are under control and that has helped me too. 1. Adherence: It all started with keeping her adherent to her medications. 2. I keep her moving! If our elderly don’t stay moving, they will regress quickly. 3. Diet - I have eliminated all sugar from her diet and she is eating so much better. 4. I try to mentally interact and challenge her daily. It has slowed the progression of dementia greatly. 5. I asked for help. Family is helping me greatly now allowing me to do what I need to do at work.6. I have said it many times, NEVER put any organization or job or responsibility ahead of yourself or your family. Take care of yourself! Jobs will come and go and so will money!7. If you are a leader and you know one of your associates is struggling with being a caregiver, please check on them and work with them!A sidenote about the impact pharmacy has on our elderly. So many of our elderly are lonely. The impact pharmacy teams make in the lives of our elderly is amazing. Many times, their only interaction for the entire day is a walk to the pharmacy to talk to a pharmacist or pharmacy technician. You are making a difference in our most vulnerable population. If you have a career and you are a caregiver, don’t give up if you are dealing with similar struggles…it will get better. #dementia #elderly #caregiver #business #pharmacy #pharmacist #hr #humanresources #pharmacists #pharmacytechnician #mentalhealth #wellbeing

A lot of exciting things going on in Michigan Pharmacy today. On May 28th, the NEW Controlled Substance Rules that we have been working on took effect. There are notable and important changes such as the removal of Gabapentin as a controlled substance in Michigan along with other important updates. Please review. When people ask me about federal or state pharmacy laws, I don't spend too much time "teaching" about the laws but rather guiding people on how to become fluent in staying UP TO DATE and learning how to FIND the laws. Two quick suggestions....1. To find the most up to date laws in Michigan, go to Google and search "Michigan Board of Pharmacy" and then click on the "Pharmacy - State of Michigan" link then scroll down to "Laws, Rules and other Resources". From here you will have a ton of options including clicking on "Administrative Rules". In the search bar type "Pharmacy" and all of the administrative rules will pop up along with the date they were last updated. This is an amazing resource to stay current. LARA does a great job of keeping this site current. 2. You can also sign up for automatic email updates from LARA from this website. Over the past 1 and 1/2 years, we have re-written almost every rule set (General Rules, Controlled Substances, Continuing Education, Pharmacy Technicians etc) so it is important to learn how to stay up to date. If you learn how to find these resources, you will always stay current in Michigan Pharmacy Law.(This is my viewpoint only and not that of the Michigan Board of Pharmacy) #pharmacy #pharmacist #Pharmacists #business #HR #humanresources #Communitypharmacy #retailpharmacy #Pharmacytechnicians #Pharmacylaw

This week, I had the honor of representing the Michigan Board of Pharmacy as the state delegate at the NABP (National Association of Boards of Pharmacy) national meeting in Fort Worth, Texas. Meeting with pharmacy boards and executives from various states was truly inspiring. The NABP leadership is driving positive change in our profession.I would wake up at 5 AM each day, eager to get the day started with a chance to interact with so many people that I’ve admired for so many years. The NABP is doing some extraordinary things. I met the creator of the platform “PULSE” that many of you will hear about soon as this platform will help protect our drug supply. Engaging with representatives from the DEA, FDA, USP, and ACPE was enlightening. The focus on advancing pharmacy practice collectively was evident throughout the meeting. Regardless of affiliations, we all shared the common goal of enhancing our profession. The emphasis on the well-being of pharmacy teams and ourselves was a highlight. Promoting a culture that prioritizes both physical and mental health is crucial. Organizations fostering servant leadership will undoubtedly thrive in the future and become the top choice for employees. I can honestly say this week was one of the most memorable experiences of my career. #Pharmacy #NABP #Leadership #ProfessionalDevelopment #Wellbeing #FutureOfWork #business #pharmacists #pharmacist #pharmacytechnicians #humanresources #pharmacytechnichian #HR#change
