Try fig spread with grainy dijon mustard. Great.

Rowan

Here is a version that will change your life:

Home sliced fresh crusty loaf
Spring mix or butter lettuce
Thick slices of a mature cheddar (Shelburne Farms 1/2year or Extra Sharp Cabot are perfect)
Patek's Brinjal (eggplant) Pickle

Couldn't find any Branston Pickle recipes in the archive. Please devote a recipe test to Branston Pickle. Sounds fantastic and a good holiday or dinner party gift.

Christine

Stonewall Kitchen's bacon jam...yes! I'll try this combo! Besides, it will give me a reason to visit the Stonewall Kitchen store. Not that it ever takes much of a reason to visit them.

Barbara

1-2 Tbsp of Chutney or a bitter orange marmalade, mixed into plain Cream Cheese also makes a wonderful sandwich spread also. Add some crumbled, crystallized ginger and it's perfect. Especially on a dark bread or a raisin bread!

Rosa

Tried this today with mango chutney and sharp cheddar. Excellent!

Lee Ann Daly

Tears spring to my eyes! My dear father ate this as breakfast for the last 8 years of his beautiful life.

JC

You purchase Branston Pickle. In the Irish, British Aisle.

Honestly, I am not a fan of this flavor combination. I feel like a lot of the comments and positive reviews are from people who majorly deviated from the recipe. Of course bacon jam tastes good on a cheddar sandwich! But does orange marmalade taste good with it? Nope.

Jane

How about some onion marmalade with this? Or some Ballymaloe Tomato Jam?

Kathy

One of our favorite combos - sharp cheddar and mango chutney. On crackers, makes an impromptu appetizer for unexpected guests.

JAbnett

I do find marmalade and cheese a great combination and the touch of cucumber would give a very interesting crunch.

Dorothy Muller

Used fig & onion jam (Anarchy in a Jar). Fabulous!

Meg

Continuing with the sweet & savoury... peanut butter plus spicy tomato jam is excellent (such as the one Mark Bittman wrote about in 2008 in the NY Times).

If the jam contains both hot chilli and ginger, then you basically end up with a sandwich version of Pad Thai.

SC

Mango chutney in place of marmalade!

Victoria

I made these both as mentioned and with pear instead of cucumber. Both amazing. Pumpkin butter is also a great marmalade sub in cooler months.

Bri

I’ve always been strangely drawn to this unusual recipe. It seems like the sort of thing an eccentric east coast professor would eat in the Catskills during summer break. Do the rest of y’all routinely keep pumpernickel bread and marmalade in the pantry?

MeBoat

Used plum sauce in place of marmalade. Yum.

Tracy

The marmalade choices were underwhelming so I used apricot preserves instead. The substitution didn’t disappoint, the sandwich was absolutely delicious.

Angela Corbet

I've been eating marmalade and cheddar on rye my whole life. Yummy! Love the idea of crisp cucumber. Thanks, Melissa.

charles

cheddar and dill or bread-and-butter pickle with or without butter, mayonnaise or miracle whip (more or less a tangier, sweeter mayo), not as fresh or elegant as Melissa’s recipe, but hits many of the same notes with refrigerator staples.

Bev.

Any recommendations for a good orange marmalade I can find in a supermarket?

S. Berry

I love apples on my cheese sandwiches, so apple butter would be great. And cucumbers are always a great addition.

Nancy in Vermont

Great combo. Variations: add lettuce or swap w cuke, and use hot pepper jelly w/ or instead of marmalade. Warm in oven before adding cukes &/or lettuce, then add remaining bread. Yum.

Becky

I miss-remembered the ‘recipe’ and made it with thin slices of apple with a few flakes of Maldon salt. It was a perfect late lunch!

Carrie G

I loved this, but now I substitute apple slices for the cucumber. Thanks for a great idea, Melissa!

Stephanie

Tasty little number that hits the spot. Can’t wait to try the other variations mentioned!

Jennifer

I saw this just after I had just finished my English Cheddar and Branson Pickle sandwich, my fall back for a quick lunch.

LK in CT

I had something similar in Scotland on a hiking trip; very satisfying. I think your substitution of the marmalade is wonderful.

Hannah

I used homemade rye bread, which I think I cut too thickly and was a little too crumbly for this sandwich. Next time, I will try pumpernickel as the recipe states. I think thin sliced bread would be best. The cucumber was a little slippery tasting for me and didn't add much. Maybe sliced pickles would be better!
