I first had this lovely beverage at a local coffee shop in Columbus called Kittie’s Cafe. Let me reiterate, I drove halfway across Columbus when I saw the Lucky Charms latte on their Instagram. It was worth it.

The recipe is pretty simple and includes one of my favorite breakfast cereals, Lucky Charms. Before you get on me about artificial colors (I KNOW), this is like the one totally bad thing we allow in our house, so shut it.

You might be wondering, how the heck you make a latte with cereal. It’s easy! You make a little thing called “cereal milk.” This technique was perfected by Christina Tosi (#ladygoals) of Milk Bar in NYC. You can grab the cookbook with the full recipe here on Amazon. She actually has three total cookbooks and I’m sure the other two are just as amazing, you can grab them here and here.

Essentially, cereal milk is milk steeped in cereal to get all that sweetness and flavor infused into the milk for your Lucky Charms latte! I tried it with cow’s milk and coconut milk and preferred the cow’s milk WAY more but it does work with non-dairy options. I just made a single batch, but you could easily make a whole gallon – just multiple your portions accordingly.

You’ll need a good strainer to get all the cereal out of your milk so you don’t have gross little soggy cereal morsels hanging out in there. Ew, I think I hate the word soggy.

If you need a recommendation, we have this strainer and it works great! It even comes in a three pack, so you have different sizes.

I couldn’t get great pictures of the coffee/espresso portion of this recipe but the nice thing is, you can work with whatever you have. Below are the coffee making items we have in our kitchen to appease all my caffeinated needs. Check out the recipe for all the how-to’s, whether you are using coffee or espresso.

Course: Breakfast, Drinks

Prep Time: 5 minutes minutes

Cook Time: 25 minutes minutes

Total Time: 30 minutes minutes

Servings: 1 latte

Equipment

  • Coffee Machine or Nespresso

Ingredients

Cereal Milk

  • 8 oz milk I used cows, but you can use non-dairy
  • 1/2 cup Lucky Charms

Caffeine Options

  • 2 shots espresso
  • 8 oz hot coffee
  • 8 oz cold brew

Instructions

  • Make your cereal milk first by pouring 1/2 cup Lucky Charms into 1 cup (8oz) milk of choice. Stir for a minute or two to combine and mash down a bit. Set entire container in fridge for 20-25 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes or so.

  • When you are ready to make your latte, prepare your caffeinated beverage of choice. You can use espresso, hot coffee, or even cold brew.

  • Remove Lucky Charms cereal milk from fridge and strain the cereal out of the milk. I just strained over a large bowl so I didn’t lose any milk! Don’t be alarmed if your milk is blue or green, that just means the marshmallows did their thing in the milk.

  • If you are making a hot beverage, froth your milk. We also have a cold froth option with our milk frother, so if you have that option – do that with your cold brew!

  • Gently pour your frothed milk into your espresso/hot coffee/cold brew, and stir gently to combine. Top with a few Lucky Charms and enjoy!
